Export a Confluence space into a Company Brain

Confluence keeps the one thing most wikis lose: the author. In the brain, who wrote a page is who knows the subject — and that answers "who do I ask" long after the org chart went stale.

XML/HTMLzero network calls in the build

What a Confluence export holds — and what the brain makes of it

A space admin exports the space as XML (full fidelity; HTML also parses). The brain builder reads pages with their authors, the space itself, and body excerpts. Pages become the content layer; authors become people with an expertise signal — the brain can list the pages a person wrote and the people who wrote about a system. Spaces become organization structure.

This is the export that keeps an engineer’s knowledge in the company after they leave: their pages stay attributed, so the brain still points to the runbook they wrote and the colleague who edited it next.

Get the export

How to export your Confluence data

The exact clicks, as they are today. Platforms move menus; the engine’s source docs are updated when they do.

  1. 01

Space admin → Space settings → Export space

  2. 02

Choose XML (full fidelity) → ZIP

  3. 03

Drop the archive on Confluence in Studio’s Sources — or tell Claude Code or Codex “build my brain from this”. The source is detected by itself, even inside a combined archive.

Then, next month

An export is a snapshot. Drop a newer one and press Update: your edits and _notes/ are kept, and the update report says what changed.

How Update works

Then ask it

What you can ask a brain built from Confluence

Examples, not promises: the answer is whatever your notes hold, and every answer cites the notes it came from. The more exports you add, the more these questions cross sources.

  • Who wrote the most about our deployment process, and are they still here?
  • Which pages in the Platform space have not been touched in two years?
  • Which spaces does the data team write in, and who else edits there?

limitPage history and attachments are not imported; body text comes in as excerpts, so a long design document is summarised by its opening, not held in full.

Good to know

The honest answers.

XML or HTML? XML. It keeps authors and structure in full; the HTML export parses too, with less fidelity.

Does it work with Confluence Cloud and Server? The space export is a feature of both; the brain reads the exported files, not the Confluence instance.
